First Dry Bulk Carrier certified by Green Award

For the first time in its 14 year existence, Green Award has a dry bulk carrier on its list of certified ships. In recognition of this milestone, Green Award Chairman Aart Korteland handed over the first certificate in an official ceremony during the Posidonia Exhibition in Athens in June.

Ship #1 is M/V AFOVOS (74.306 DWT), managed by the Athens based company Aegean Bulk Co Inc. and classed by DNV.

The ceremony was hosted by DNV and opened by Mr. Ioannis Kourmatzis, Senior Vice President and Regional Manager of DNV for South Europe. Mr. Kourmatzis recollected that he, on behalf of Det Norske Veritas (DNV), was involved with the start of the Green Award Foundation in the early nineties. DNV shared their expertise in auditing and helped to develop the Green Award standard for oil tankers.

In his speech, Green Award Managing Director Jan Fransen, quoted the reaction of the Master of the ship:

“We all have learned a lot these two days and we are proud to be the first bulk carrier inspected by Green Award. We are happy that, by this recognition, we can show the industry that bulk carriers are also run by competent seafarers that are dedicated to their job, thank you!”

Aegean Bulk's General Manager, Capt. Mattheou Dimitrios underlined that the management and the crew of M/V AFOVOS are very proud of the ship and the crew having met the stringent Green Award requirements related to quality, safety, environment, management and technical aspects. He also said that Green Award certification was one of the steps to reach the strategic goal because Aegean Bulk believes that the benefits that result from having Green Award-certified ships, go well beyond reductions in port dues and other services charges.

Mr. Nicky Pappadakis, Chairman of INTERCARGO, was very pleased to confirm that Aegean Bulk have agreed to become a member of INTERCARGO. He was delighted that a company of this standing has agreed to join the Association as a full member. Mr. Pappadakis referred to the name of the certified ship and revealed that “AFOVOS” means 'fearless' in English, a word that characterises the attitude of Aegean Bulk: the first company that dared to apply for the dry bulk carrier certificate.

There was also a present from the Port of Amsterdam. As Mr. Cor Oudendijk, Executive Director of Shipping of Port of Amsterdam was unable to attend, Ms. Karin Struijk, Green Award's Deputy Managing Director, handed over a special arm of the Port of Amsterdam to Capt. Dimitrios. She mentioned that the Port of Amsterdam was happy to hear that the very first bulk carrier was audited in Amsterdam as this port was the first to partner in the Green Award scheme for bulk carriers. The port issues a 6% incentive based on the port tariffs. The arm is meant to commemorate the first bulk carrier obtaining a Green Award certificate after a successful survey in Amsterdam. The Port of Amsterdam congratulates M/V AFOVOS with this achievement.
