Green Shipping World Conference

The Green Shipping World conference was held in Copenhagen on the 2 nd October 2006. After a fine selection of presentations and lively debates, it was a pleasure to conclude that corporate responsibility seems to take off in the marine industry.

Manufacturers addressed topics like sea water scrubbing, cold ironing and water ballast treatment. A classification society highlighted the environmental challenges in Arctic shipping. The ports of Long Beach and Helsinki shared their experiences with environmental friendly port operations.

Three shipping companies, two major liner companies and an offshore contractor, elaborated on corporate responsibility, environmental measures and fuel cell technology. Representatives from the European Commission and the IMO informed the audience about their actions with respect to air emissions. The Shipping Federation of Canada explained their database of Environmental Programs and the North Sea Foundation about the Clean Ship concept.

Jan Fransen, Managing Director of the Green Award Foundation was honoured to chair this event and had pleasure in observing the good steps taken in the time elapsed since previous Green Shipping conferences.
