Requirements

Ship types 
The following ship types and sizes are eligible for Green Award certification.

• Oil tankers (≥2,000 dwt)
• Chemical tankers (≥ 2,000 dwt)
• LNG carriers (all sizes)
• LPG carriers (≥ 20,000 m3) (fully refrigerated)
• Container carriers (≥ 5,000 dwt)
• Bulk carriers (≥ 20,000 dwt)
• Bulk carriers (General Cargo carriers) (≥ 20,000 dwt)
• Inland barges (currently European waters)

Scope
The Green Award Requirements address issues related to quality, safety, environment and technical areas related to the ship and the ship manager's office. The requirements also pay extra attention to crew elements. The most recent update of the Green Award requirements covers for example Monitoring of Ship Exhaust Emissions, Marpol NOx emission limits, ECDIS and Hot Work procedures.

• Cargo operations, bunkering
• Maintenance
• Condition Assessment Program
• Training of the crew
• Mooring wire maintenance
• Gas monitoring double hull
• Quality management

Examples of requirements related to environment:

• Exhaust emissions
• Water ballast
• Anti-fouling
• Ship breaking
• Navigation in ‘sensitive areas’
• Waste management

Composition
The Green award requirements consist of three parts:

1. Basic requirements (statutory elements related to ISM, MARPOL)
2. Ranking requirements (Weighted items, minimum % to be attained)
3. Visual inspection (seaworthiness, good housekeeping)


Development

Green Award develops and maintains the requirements in house and the Board of Experts keeps the requirements under review to ensure they keep pace with developments in the industry and regulatory worlds and retain their relevance. For example, the latest (currently applicable) requirements contain exhaust emissions related items which is a hot issue at the moment. These include both a participation in the ESI, which is now mandatory for obtaining the Green Award certificate, and items that resulted from the extensive research carried out by the Green Award bureau used for the ranking score. The bureau has also recently developed a new set of requirements for chemical tankers on the basis of detailed consultations with the industry.
